The event has been absent from the golf calendar for three years and will be played over Sentosa Golf Club's award-winning Serapong course on the island resort from September 8 to 11.
Graham Bell, board member of the Sentosa Leisure Group - the presenting sponsors - and chairman of the Singapore Open 2005 Organising Committee, said: "Today, Sentosa island is increasingly becoming the venue of choice for international events. Boat Asia 2005 will return to Sentosa in April this year while international yachts from Clipper’s round-the-world race are scheduled for a 10-day stopover here in January 2006.”
Singapore Golf Association (SGA), the local sanctioning body, and promoters World Sport Group (WSG) both heralded the return of the tournament.
The corporate sector is said to have rallied round to ensure the resurrection of the blue riband event, which was first played in 1961. It will be a full-field tournament on the burgeoning Asian Tour with several leading players from around the world also invited.
Mr S Chandra Das, president of the SGA, said: "The Singapore Open is steeped in tradition and it was very sad when it ceased after the 2001 tournament," he said. "There was a lack of sponsorship with those companies having money to spend preferring to support charity rather than competitive events."
