The tramway - an important element in Paris' bid to win the 2012 Olympic Games – can carry 100,000 passengers a day around the southern districts of the capital.
The first rails of the euros 311million ($405million) system were put down on Thursday but it is not scheduled to begin carrying passengers until late next year, reports aroundtherings.com
Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe has promoted improved public transport and imposed restrictions on traffic in a bid to persuade Parisians to leave their cars at home.
