2012 BID NEWS: MAJOR EVENT HOSTING COULD BOOST MOSCOW BID

Moscow hopes that a series of major sporting events being staged in Moscow could boost its chances of staging the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The events start next week with the Russian Winter Track and Field Athletics Tournament.

Later this year the city is hosting the World Yachting Championship and European Cycling Championship. Next year Moscow is scheduled to host the World Track and Field Athletics Championship and in 2007 it is due to host the hockey championships.

Moscow’s Deputy Mayor Mikhail Men said that hosting the World Track and Field Athletics Championship will be another cornerstone in Moscow’s 2012 bid, reports GamesBids.com

Construction will begin this year on the fifth “Olympic” ring road, said Moscow’s Vice Mayor and head of the city’s bid committee, Valeri Shantsev. Moscow is planning to match the five Olympic rings with the same number of city ring roads in time for the 2012 Games.

The vice mayor added that traffic flow will be improved by the decision not to include any traffic lights on the new road. The city’s plan is for Olympic vehicles to be given priority on the five ring roads during the Games.
