GPWC PLANS TO CONTINUE

Tagged in &

Plans for a motor racing series to rival Formula 1 are claimed to be still alive despite last week’s deal with Ferrari which sees the series’ leading brand tied to F1 until 2012 at least.

The Grand Prix World Championship (GPWC) organisation’s Juergen Hubbert is reported to have written to the nine teams who have yet to sign the Concorde Agreement.

In it he says he is confident that GPWC is the vehicle to create fairness in the sport. The rival series says it will distribute a greater share of revenues to the teams.

The GPWC was set up by Fiat (Ferrari), BMW (Williams), DaimlerChrysler (McLaren) and Renault to safeguard the manufacturers' interests in F1.

But without Ferrari, the most glamorous and successful team, it is unlikely that GPWC could succeed. Broadcasters and sponsors, let along spectators, would find it hard to accept that a series without Ferrari would be the real deal.

Tomorrow, F1 team bosses are planning to meet Ecclestone to see what he is offering as part of the new Concorde Agreement.
