WSA APPOINTS NEW COMMERCIAL TEAM

The Welsh Sports Association (WSA) has appointed a new commercial unit to reduce dependency on public sector funding and boost the marketing and communication of sport and outdoor recreation in Wales.

WSA, the umbrella organisation for the national governing bodies of sport and physical recreation in Wales, will set up a commercial team based within the Welsh Institute for Sport at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff.

It will include Kieran Harris, David Cotton and Kimmo Muttonen. Harris is head of marketing and sponsorship and will be responsible for helping to generate revenue from sponsorship and commercial partnerships and to enhance the marketing programmes undertaken by the governing bodies.

Cotton is developing individual benefits from the leisure, publishing and retail sectors to augment the value of sports club and governing body membership fees. In addition, he is creating a nationwide voucher scheme to encourage Welsh employers to support recreation and sport in the Principality through employee benefits expenditure.

Muttonen will help to deliver an Information Communications Technology (ICT) strategy, including an integrated membership database, which will support these marketing and commercial activities.

In addition to facilitating co-operation and joint action among the national organisations, the Welsh Sports Association is also working with the Sports Council for Wales to help deliver the Modern Sport Programme, initially to 14 key sports; athletics, badminton, cricket, disability sports, golf, gymnastics, hockey, swimming, squash, tennis, yachting, cycling, netball, and canoeing.
