NHL POSTPONES MEETING

Tagged in

The National Hockey League has cancelled a meeting with its board of governors due to be held next week, saying it has nothing new to report.

There was speculation that the January 14 meeting could have announced the end of the season or a cut-off date for saving the campaign.

Owners have demanded a salary cap to control costs, but players insist they will not agree to a limit on their earning potential.

The two sides last met on December 14, when the NHL rejected a union proposal that included a 24 per cent salary cut. The union in return rejected a league counter-proposal.
