One bid leader was keen to avoid an “unseemly contest of generosity”, reports aroundtherings.com.
Madrid and Paris have already announced plans to help. Madrid is to donate 100,000 euros from its own funds and has opened a bank account to enable corporate supporters to make donations.
The Paris bid’s Corporate Club will send 100,000 euros to the UN High Commission for Refugees and the same amount for Doctors Without Frontiers.
New York, London and Moscow have not yet declared plans to provide aid but are said to be looking at an appropriate way to get involved, most likely through sponsors and individual staff donations.
An official with one of the bids yet to announce tsunami aid says the bid may decide to keep any publicity about the pledge to a minimum, to avoid a generosity contest.
