PYEONGCHANG WINS KOREAN OLYMPIC VOTE

The South Korean winter sports resort of PyeongChang has been confirmed as the country’s candidate for the 2014 Winter Games.

PyeongChang was the surprising runner-up to Vancouver in the race for 2010.

The vote by the Korean Olympic Committee general assembly was considered a formality following a decision by the KOC executive committee favouring PyeongChang over rival Muju, reports aroundtherings.com.

Earlier this month the International Ski Federation issued a report that Muju’s slopes were not suitable for Olympic alpine events.

A bid committee is expected to be formed in January along with a task force from the KOC.

The International Olympic Committee will open the application process for the 2014 campaign in May. Applications are expected from bids in Austria, Bulgaria and Sweden, while other contenders from Europe could emerge as well.

The IOC vote will take place in July 2007.
