MARLINS IN LAS VEGAS TALKS

Las Vegas’ hopes of landing a Major League Baseball franchise have taken a step forward after team bosses of the Florida Marlins held talks over a possible move.

Officials met with the mayor of Las Vegas, Oscar Goodman, and other representatives to discuss a potential move citing lengthy on-going negotiations for a new ballpark in Miami for their itchy-feet.
The Marlins currently share the Pro Player Stadium with the NFL’s Miami Dolphins and have been in negotiations with local authorities over plans to build a new 38,000-seat neighbouring venue.
Crucially it will boast a retractable roof; currently the Marlins complain no roof drives fans away when it is wet and offers no protection in the scorching hot summers.
A spokesman for Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria denied, however, any deal to move to Las Vegas was imminent.
He said: “These were informal, initial discussions to get to know each other a little better. Vegas wants a baseball team and the Marlins were interested in hearing what they had to say.
“The Marlins are committed to south Florida, but they need to examine all options.”
