2012 BID NEWS: NEW YORK VENUE APPROVED

New York City’s bid for 2012 was boosted by legislative approval for an expansion of Javits Convention Center, says bid leader Dan Doctoroff.

The Javits Center would host six sports during a New York Olympics, as well as being the main press centre for the Games, reports aroundtherings.com

New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg says the vote in the general assembly “puts us an important step closer to getting the facilities in place that we need so the International Olympic Committee can see that New York City is ready for the Games.”

The expansion is part of a $5.5billion series of developments planned for Manhattan’s West Side, including a new stadium.

The stadium - for which the city and state will pay $600million of its estimated $1.4billion cost – is the most controversial project in the package.

It is subject to a separate approval process expected to conclude in February.
