TURIN MAYOR: OLYMPIC BUDGET CRISIS LOOMS

The budget for the 2006 Winter Olympics will not be approved without further spending commitments from sponsors and the Italian government, Turin mayor Sergio Chiamparino has told aroundtherings.com.

"Before December 21 there must be certainties or at least precise commitments from sponsors and the government, or the conditions for approving the budget will not be there," Chiamparino said.

The board of TOROC will meet on December 21 to vote on a revised budget, after postponing approval in its November 24 meeting. In his capacity as mayor, Chiamparino has a vote on the board.

"I'm not willing to speak for others" on the board, he said about his doubts for the budget, "but this is the prevalent opinion".
