ASIAN GOLF TOUR SPREADS TO CHINA AND BRUNEI

China will stage a new Asian Tour golf event in Beijing next year, the latest tournament to be played in a country where participation is growing amid a surging economy.

The CGA Championship will take place from June 2 to 5 at Grand Ipoch Golf Club with prize money of $1.25 million, the highest for a tournament in Asia sanctioned solely by the Asian Tour, reports Bloomberg.

The Asian Tour held six tournaments in mainland China in 2004, up from one in 2001, as sponsors sought to tap increasing consumer demand in the world's fastest-growing major economy.

China already has the fifth-highest golf-playing population.

“The CGA Championship is a landmark development as it will be the richest full-field Asian Tour tournament in professional golf history in Asia,'' said Louis Martin, chief executive of the Asian Tour.

The tournament has yet to announce a sponsor.

The Asian Tour will also stage its first event in Brunei starting June 30. It is co-sanctioning five of 14 events in the first half of the year with the European PGA Tour.

Prize money for the opening six months of the season will total $11.5million, up from $8million in the same period the year before.
