Barwick, the leading contender for the role of chief executive left vacant following Mark Palios’ resignation in August, was one of three men interviewed by the 12-man board, reports PA Sport.
Some board members had wanted to delay the choice of a new chief executive, believing that this should wait until after a review into the governing body’s operations.
But recent events - the racist abuse that England players received in Madrid last week and David Beckham’s admission that he got booked on purpose against Wales last month – have appeared to show up a lack of leadership.
The FA is therefore likely to make an announcement soon, providing that a majority can be reached among the 12 board members.
Barwick’s main rival from an original 10-strong short-list is Richard Bowker, the ex-head of the Strategic Rail Authority, who has a strong business background.
While there is also a third candidate, with a business background but whose identity has so far remained a secret, Barwick already has a groundswell of support, especially from the professional side of the game.
