Aroundtherings.com reports Ueberroth as saying yesterday “the competitors would use it to your downfall, in my view”.
He was speaking to a breakfast of business leaders on the opening day of international campaigning for the 2012 Games, after bid books from all five cities were received at the IOC’s headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.
“This is going to be a close race and I think it’s essential”, says Ueberroth.
Plans for a stadium on Manhattan’s west side are in the midst of a contentious media campaign. The stadium is to be built for the New York Jets football team starting in 2009, but would serve the Olympics three years later.
Ueberroth says he believes New York City has a winning bid and that the city’s international connections are a major asset.
