WIMBLEDON SURPLUS SWELLS BY £1M

The Lawn Tennis Association’s income from the All England Club after this year’s Wimbledon Championship has unexpectedly increased by £1million.

The figure – given to the governing body for the sport’s development – rose to £26.8million, reported the UK’s Daily Telegraph.

But it has still not returned to the high of 2001 when the LTA received more than £32million.

The amount has fallen due to insurance premium rises in the wake of terrorist attacks in the US and a drop in income from broadcasters.

The LTA split the money equally between grassroots programmes and the performance side of the game.
