BUILDING BEGINS ON £15M LEISURE CENTRE

Building work is now underway for the £15million Mile End Park community leisure scheme in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

The project is part funded by a £5.4million grant from Sport England, together with funding from the Millennium Commission, New Deal for Communities (NDC), the Football Foundation and Tower Hamlets Council.

The scheme comprises 10 third-generation artificial floodlit mini-football pitches and associated changing room facilities, and the construction of a state-of-the-art leisure centre.

The centre will boast two swimming pools - a 25m eight-lane pool and a 17m learner pool with moveable floor, two fitness centres, an aerobics studio and a six-court sports hall.

The project will be handed over in two phases, with the football pitches ready for play in the early part of 2005 and the new leisure centre open to the public early 2006.
