ITALIAN PRESIDENT ENTERS OLYMPICS CRISIS

Italian president Carlo Azeglio Ciampi says "cooperation in the national interest” is needed to solve the leadership crisis that has struck the Turin Olympics.

Speaking at an event unrelated to the Olympics, Ciampi said Italy "must show that it can host efficiently such an important international event", reports aroundtherings.com

Meanwhile in Turin, Mayor Sergio Chiamparino is said to still be considering resigning from the TOROC Board in protest over efforts by the national government to take control of the 2006 Games.

Chiamparino and Castellani, his predecessor as mayor, allies in the center-left of Italian politics, are alarmed that the right-wing coalition in the national government, headed by Silvio Berlusconi, is about to cut the influence of the Turin politicians in the running of the Games.

The crisis has come about as a result of a 180million euro shortfall in revenue for the organising committee.

Berlusconi has pledged to find ways to help Turin close the gap, but his help comes with strings attached.

He has formally named deputy sports minister, former Italian National Olympic Committee chief and current IOC member Mario Pescante as supervisor of the Turin Olympics, reporting to Foreign Minister Franco Fratini.
