“We will have to determine now as soon as possible the venue locations and the construction plans for all sports and disciplines,” said Hein Verbruggen at the opening session of the IOC co-ordination commission for Beijing.
According to aroundtherings.com Beijing organisers want to cut several construction projects from the budget to save money and avoid building white elephants.
Baseball, softball and field hockey are among the sports affected by the proposed changes, which Verbruggen wants settled with dispatch.
In his opening remarks to the meeting, Beijing 2008 president Liu Qi revealed that safety – as well as cost - was behind changes to the biggest construction project, the National Stadium.
Liu said the “level of safety” for the new stadium would be improved by the use of less steel and the elimination of a retractable roof.
