The Spanish government says it will back the Madrid bid for the 2012 Olympics with a pledge of 833million euros.

More than half of the money will be used to boost security.

"This represents the government's unequivocal support for a state project that enjoys wide support”, says Deputy Prime Minister Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega.

Sports venue construction would be covered by 299million euros of the government guarantee.
