NIKE FINED OVER JORDAN 'SHOW'

Sportswear giant Nike has been hit with a Taiwan $1m fine after a highly-publicised public appearance by NBA legend Michael Jordan lasted just 90 seconds.

Fans purchasing Nike products had been promised the chance to attend ‘The Show’ at the Taipei World Trade Centre in May with Jordan himself scheduled to make a five minute appearance.

But despite a surge in sales as fans tried to secure one of the 700 tickets, Jordan appeared for just 90 seconds, prompting fans to report the promotion as having violated fair trade law and threaten to boycott the brand’s products.

Said a statement by the Fair Trade Commission: “Consumers bought Jordan-branded Nike products in exchange for tickets to the show.

"But Jordan's 90-second appearance was disproportionate to the one-hour event the company had billed. This was unfair to consumers."

Nike was fined Taiwan $1m – approximately $30,000.
