MADRID'S 2012 'ADVANTAGE'

Madrid says 90 percent of its Olympic stadia will be complete by 2006 – putting it ahead of its rival bidders hoping to land the 2012 Olympic Games.

Madrid lines up alongside Paris, London, New York and Moscow in the race to win the right to host the 2012 Games, and says the advanced state of many of its facilities puts it in pole position.

The mayor of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz-GallardC3n, the major political figure leading the Madrid 2012 bid said at a conference in Madrid to discuss Olympic infrastructures in the city: “At the moment we have 70 percent of all stadia either completed or under development, which puts us in a great position with respect to our rivals if we consider that by 2006 we will have 90 percent ready.”

The IOC will make a final decision on the 2012 host next year.
