METS TO LAUNCH OWN TV NETWORK

Major League Baseball’s New York Mets have signed a deal to launch their own TV network.

Sterling Entertainment Enterprises (SEE), the media company formed by owners of the Mets, has agreed a deal with Time Warner and Comcast to have its own dedicated channel up and running by spring 2006.
Although the new network has yet to have a name, all parties will have an equity interest, with Comcast overseeing the day-to-day management.
The Mets intend to broadcast 125 regular-season games in addition to other Mets-related news and features. It will also broadcast games in HDTV as well as provide video-on-demand content.
Said Steve Burke, chief operating officer of Comcast Corporation, and president of Comcast Cable: "Our participation allows us an opportunity to provide compelling sports programming and greater value for our customers in the New York Mets viewing area, and an opportunity to apply our sports programming expertise in a way that will benefit Mets fans."
The new deal will replace the Mets’ existing contract with Cablevision’s two regional sports networks which ends after the 2005 season.
