The unexpected victory of the Greek national football team in EURO 2004 gave the country automatic participation in the Confederations Cup - a competition between the continental champion teams of the world, plus the current World Champions (Brazil) and the host country (Germany).
It also triggered a fierce battle between the major networks in Greece, all of which wanted to win the right to follow Greek fortunes during the event.
ERT, which already has an exclusive agreement with Infront for the Greek broadcast rights to the 2006 FIFA World Cup, emerged the winner.
The Confederations Cup in Germany will act as a testing ground for the World Cup the following year, not only for the national teams participating in the event, but also for certain aspects of the host broadcasting.
This is being organised by Host Broadcast Services (HBS), a subsidiary company of Infront, and will be the first World Cup to be fully covered in HDTV [high definition television].
