This is up $5 million from the 1999 Ryder Cup at The Country Club in Brookline, reports Golf World magazine.
By comparison, the Masters generates about $44 million in revenue and the US Open $50 million. After expenses, the PGA of America will earn more than $20 million in profit from the Ryder Cup.
Entertainment tents this year sold for $175,000 to $350,000, according to the PGA, down from the $275,000 to $500,000 charged in '99. However, 38,000 tickets have been sold for each day of this year's event, compared to 30,000 at Brookline.
The $70 million in revenue comes from tents, tickets, TV rights (NBC paid about $15 million), merchandise sales, online sales, concessions, and charity events, which charge up to $3,950 a person and includes a round of golf and a weekly pass.
For the third consecutive Ryder Cup, the PGA will donate $2.6 million to charities in the name of the 12 American players and captain Hal Sutton, who will not otherwise be paid.
