Major sport organisations sign up for security summit

Representatives of many of the world’s leading sports organisations and events will be at the first International Sports Security Summit, in London on October 27 and 28.

The International Olympic Committee, FIFA, International Cricket Council and Rugby Football Union and Australia’s NRL are among the governing bodies that will be represented at the event, along with security specialists whose expertise has been deployed on events including Rugby World Cup and the Cricket World Cup.

Delegations from the London and Paris bids to host the 2012 Olympic Games will attend the conference where they will join executives from many other sports bodies, events organisers and representatives of private and public security and intelligence sectors.

SportBusiness is a partner of the conference at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre.

The International Sports Security Summit ‘04 has been designed for event professionals, organisers, major event managers, police, security and intelligence agencies, emergency services, club officials and representatives of the private security sector.

The two-day conference and exhibition will examine the worsening security climate, assess the threat to sports events and provide insight and practical advice on the steps to be taken to develop and implement appropriate security strategies and programmes.

The International Sports Security Summit’s agenda will include sessions dealing with:

Devising strategy

Implementing security policy

Effective intelligence sharing

Co-ordinating local, national and international security agencies

The role of accreditation and access control

Successful implementation of security technology

Close protection for VIPs and competitors

Crowd Control

Recruiting and Training volunteer personnel

The role of sports architects on building-in effective security

Effective use of CCTV and Command and Control Software

Risk management and insurance implications

The conference will run in tandem with an exhibition of relevant products and services.

SportBusiness Group editorial director Kevin Roberts said: “Sport and other major national and international events are considered to be at particular risk because of their high profile. This has led some analysts to suggest it may become impossible to achieve insurance cover for some events within the next decade.

“International Sports Security Summit ’04 is the event industry’s response to the challenges we face. It is an opportunity to exchange information, share experience and establish best practice in a critical area.”
