MotoGP set for US return

MotoGP is set to return to the United States next year with a Grand Prix at the Laguna Seca circuit.

A preliminary agreement has been secured with promoters Dorna Sports to hold a race for the next five years.

“The support from fans and sponsors has been of great encouragement in this decision,” Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca general manager Gill Campbell told the motogp.com website. “Corporate sponsorships are vital for the track improvements that will need to be made to satisfy FIM regulations.

“We feel that we have a great product with a tremendous amount of potential. We continue to produce world-class events at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and that’s what we’re all about.”

The circuit hosted the 500cc (now MotoGP) world championship from 1988 to 1994.

The 500cc class was changed to MotoGP for the start of the 2002 season to allow four-stroke bikes up to 990cc to take part.
