According to ESPN.com Reggie Fowler met with Vikings owner Red McCombs on Tuesday in McCombs' San Antonio office, as reported in the St. Paul Pioneer Press, citing an unnamed league source.
The Star Tribune of Minneapolis first reported Fowler's interest in the team.
To acquire the Vikings, Fowler's group would have to prove its financial worth to the NFL's finance committee and the league's owners would have to approve, said Chad Ostlund, director of research and development for the Vikings.
McCombs, unhappy with the revenue the team can make in the Metrodome and unable to get traction on a new publicly funded stadium, has had the team on the market since 2002. Among the people known to be interested is Glen Taylor, a Minnesota businessman, whose offer has been well short of McCombs' reported $600 million asking price.
Fowler, 45, played football at Wyoming from 1978 to 1981. In the early 1980s, he was on the roster of the NFL's Cincinnati Bengals and also played one season as a linebacker for the USFL's Arizona Wranglers.
In 1989, Fowler founded a company in suburban Chandler called Spiral Inc., which supplies grocery stores with bags, cups, containers, labels and janitorial supplies. Spiral had a reported $314 million in sales in 2003.
Fowler also owns broadcasting, aviation, and construction management and distribution companies with the Spiral name, the Arizona Republic reported, citing Arizona Corporation Commission records.
