Vijay Singh's victory in the Sunday play-off at Whistling Straits earned a 4.9 overnight rating with a 10 share for CBS, up from the 4.7/10 the network got last year for coverage of Shaun Micheel's first major victory.
With a well-stocked leaderboard this year - former major winners Singh, Justin Leonard, Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els were among those in contention Sunday - the final round performed relatively well despite being shown opposite events from the Athens Olympics.
The rating peaked with an 8.0/14 rating from 7.30 to 8 pm, when Singh, Leonard and Chris DiMarco were finishing their three-hole playoff.
The two-day average overnight rating for Saturday and Sunday's coverage was 4.1/9 - a drop of about seven per cent from last year.
Overnight ratings measure the 55 largest TV markets, covering about 70 per cent of the United States.
