The International Rugby Board has made it clear that the story appearing on sportbusiness.com on Friday does not reflect the current position over plans for a global rugby competition.
Chris Rea, the IRB's head of communications, said: "The global season and a whole range of issues relating to it are all being looked at by the IRB governance working party.
"The views of the unions are currently being sought as part of the governance review."
He stressed that a press release announcing the plans last week had "absolutely no authority" in terms of IRB endorsement.
