There have been concerns that fewer than half of the 5.3 million tickets available have been sold, leaving organisers little more than 72 hours to shift a million tickets to meet their target.
While athletics and soccer - fuelled by the senior Greece team’s Euro 2004 triumph - have inevitably proved the most popular sports, tickets for many other events remain available.
Organisers sold 284,000 tickets last week but will have to better that performance this week if they are to fulfil their ambitions.
The rush to buy tickets is seen as another example of the last minute mentality that has surrounded the Athens Games. Delays and prevarication over the provision of acilities and infrastructure fostered doubts as to whether Athens would be ready to stage the Games.
This hit sales efforts across the board, notably in the travel and hospitality sectors where companies found potential customers unwilling to commit because of the continuing uncertainty.
