Prime Ministers back Islanders

The Pacific Islanders fight for inclusion in an expanded Super 12 received backing from unexpected quarters, with Australian Prime Minister John Howard and his New Zealand counterpart Helen Clark supporting the Islanders Alliance.

Clark even promised to raise the issue of the Islanders' future at the upcoming Pacific Forum in Samoa.

While this show of support is a massive boost to the Pacific Islanders Rugby Alliance (PIRA) in it's fight to gain acceptance from SANZAR, chief executive Chris Moller has indicated the board is unlikely to be receptive to Governmental meddling.

“I presume the government will be able to change the number of weeks in the year to make it possible for extra teams to get into the competition,” Moller said.
