Qatar opens new track

A major new international motorsports venue in the Middle East has been officially opened.

The Losail International Circuit of Qatar will host a MotoGP race in October, before staging a round of the World Superbikes series in 2005.

Track chiefs say it has no intention of bidding for Formula One races yet – modifications to the track would be needed to bring it up to standard – but says it has secured a long-term commitment from MotoGP to stage races at the circuit.

The track cost an estimated $75m.
