The survey, conducted by one of England’s official sponsors – Nationwide – put Rooney top of the league after quizzing more than 25,000 fans.
Rooney polled almost 49 percent of votes from the fans, who believe his contribution to Euro 2004 outshines the contribution from any other England player at a European Championship or
World Cup.

Wayne Rooney (Euro 2004) - 48.6 percent
Paul Gascoigne (World Cup 1990) – 20 percent
Gary Lineker (World Cup 1986) - 18.5 percent
Michael Owen (World Cup 1998) – 11 percent
David Platt (World Cup 1990) - 1.8 percent
