NBC tennis audience swells

Andy Roddick’s attempt to bring the Wimbledon crown back to the US helped push TV ratings of the match in his home country to the highest for four years.

According to the latest figures, Roddick’s unsuccessful battle again reigning champion Roger Federer achieved a 3.6 overnight rating on NBC.
But despite that figure being up on last year’s 2.7 rating, it still failed to beat the rating for the women’s final. Maria Sharapova’s sensational straight set upset of Serena Williams pulled in a 3.9 overnight rating – still a slight drop on when the Williams sisters took on one another last year.
The Roddick/Federer final was the highest rated men’s final since Pete Sampras won his final men’s singles title back in 2000 and notched up a 5.0 rating.
