Superset comes to Europe

After a successful launch in the US last year, Europe is set to welcome the arrival of a quick-fire version of tennis which promises to do for the sport what the one-day game did for cricket.

Superset Tennis delivers one-set matches between top players with tournaments completed within a day, and the latest technology employed to make the event as exciting as possible for both the spectator in the arena, and on TV.

After success last year, London’s Wembley Arena will host Europe’s first event on October 3 with big names such as John McEnroe, Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski taking part.

Should it prove a success, then it is likely to pave the way for a world series next year.

The tournament is played over two sessions, an afternoon session ‘Superset Elimin8’ and a night session ‘Superset Final4’. The first session features all eight players in four head-to-head sets. The losers are then eliminated and the winners are promoted to the semi-finals and then the final.

Explains event organiser Stephen Duval: “In today’s society we need an entertainment-rich, innovative, technologically enhanced product to satisfy our desires.

“Superset will attract a new audience of younger people with busy lives looking for a one hit, sudden death showdown of top international tennis.

“Research shows tennis needs a new approach, so don’t be surprised if by 2005 we have a Superset World Series. Where else can tennis fans see so many top players in a single day?”

In the UK, the tournament will be shown live on Sky Sports with highlights on BBC1’s Grandstand.

Meanwhile, Britain number one player Tim Henman has extended an existing deal with washing power brand Aerial.

For the first time, Henman will wear Ariel's patch on his shirt at Wimbledon, as part of a new deal which sees Henman sign-up to the brand until 2007.
