Gil’s condition had been deteriorating over the week, since suffering a stroke the previous weekend. He was 71.
Fans and players were among a reported 15,000 who paid their last respects to Gil by visiting the funeral chapel set up at the club’s ground.
Among the famous names paying their respects were Juan Antonio Samaranch – the former IOC president – and Joan Gaspart, the former president of rival Spanish soccer club Barcelona.
