Kansas set for franchise boost

The Anschutz Entertainment Group is looking to bring a major league basketball or ice hockey franchise to Kansas City.

It is planning to plough $50m into a new $250m, 20,000-seat arena in the city and has already started talks about bringing an NBA or NHL team in as its main tenant.
Said Timothy Leiweke, vice president of AEG. “We have had conversations specifically with those leagues' franchises. I don't think there's a better time to get involved with a National Hockey League team than now."
Private funding will account for half the total cost of the new arena, which already has signed a telecoms company as naming rights centre. The venue will be called the Spring Center after the firm.
