The Co-ordination Commission’s chairman Denis Oswald (pictured) will head the delegation on a three-day visit of the major facilities required to successfully stage the event.
Like so many cities before it, Athens has been dogged with stories suggesting all will not be ready in time for the big event which gets underway in August.
Yet government officials say all will be ready in time and, despite a major budget over-run and concerns over security, the Games will a great success.
Today is set to see the first stage of getting the sliding roof over the main Olympic Stadium in place, to coincide with the IOC visit.
The delay in erecting the roof has long been cited as a key concern and Athens chiefs hope this week will see it take a significant step forward – and reassure the IOC.
Although last week’s bomb blasts in Athens have not in any way been linked to the Games, they came on the 100-day countdown to the event – and added to the pressure Greek chiefs are under.
