The decision follows a threat by riders to boycott the race unless a 1975 ruling preventing any form of promotional wording on uniforms was lifted.
The judge ruled the ban violated the First Amendment, covering freedom of speech or expression.
However, don’t expect to see GoldenPalace.com among the sponsors. The race organisers at Churchill Downs said no advertising will be allowed from any company involved in betting or casinos. It has also stated jockey sponsors cannot be direct competition with existing event partners.
Said Churchill Downs president Steve Sexton: "Churchill Downs has established house rules on jockey advertising to balance our jockeys' desire to pursue sponsorship opportunities with our responsibility to protect the interests of our existing racetrack and affiliate sponsors, who have made a long term commitment to Churchill Downs, its marquee events and the sport of horse racing."
