London in Tour talks

London city chiefs will today meet with organisers of cycling’s Tour de France, in a bid to win the right to stage the opening stages of a future race.

Jean-Marie Leblanc, director of the race, will hold discussions with the Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone.

The UK has staged parts of the race before, but London has applied to stage the opening stages of a race – no earlier than 2007 – on its streets.
Said Leblanc: “It is a very prestigious proposal. This is only the first meeting, but we are interested in the proposal.”
