Dutch mobile tender

The Dutch soccer league has opened the tender process for its mobile rights for the next three seasons.

The league is inviting tenders for the mobile video rights for all 306 games in the Eredivisie for the three seasons commencing at the beginning of the 2004/05 league season.

The rights available are: Goals scored during all the matches in the Eredivisie, delivered directly to mobile phones; and MMS still images of match action.
Any deal will be on an exclusive basis.
This is the first time the Eredivisie has tendered mobile video rights separately from its other audio-visual rights.

Chris Woerts, who is managing the process on behalf of all the clubs in the Eredivisie, said: “Over the past six months we have seen high interest from various mobile networks and rights agencies with a view to purchasing our mobile content. Due to the rapidly developing nature of this market and the resulting complexity in the negotiations, the Dutch Eredivisie feels that an invitation to tender is the most efficient process to commercialise these rights. We are looking for strategies that develop brand of the league and will base our decision on both this and the financial offers made.

“We are also following a recent trend in the sports industry to manage the rights in-house and have selected Will Muirhead of Sportev to advise on the sale. We had other discussions with potential advisors, but decided on Will as he brings with him a wealth of experience in this emerging mobile sports sector.”
