NHL threat to Turin Games

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has said his players will not be released for duty during the 2006 Olympic Games if a labour dispute forces the league to close its doors next season.

According to Rene Fasel, the president of the International Ice Hockey Federation, Bettman told him any disruption to the season as a result of a dispute over a new collective bargaining agreement, would see the release window for the Games closed.
The existing CBA is due to expire in September this year, and it is widely expected the league will lock horns with the players’ association forcing the action to switch from the rink and into the boardrooms.
A release clause to allow the league to suspend operations for the Games – which in 2006 will be held in Turin, Italy – would form part of any new CBA.
An NHL-free tournament would be a blow both to the players and the league itself. The NHL has made no secret in the past of the power of the global TV coverage in driving awareness of its league, teams and players. Likewise, the big names find themselves with the perfect opportunity to further boost their image and deliver extra value to sponsors.
Said Fasel: "It's quite clear from what Gary has told us; that if they're not playing in January they're not coming to Torino.”
