UAE bowls up new venue

A new $22m cricket stadium in the Middle East is to be officially opened next month.

The Sheikh Zaved stadium in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, has the full backing of the nation’s ruling royal family and intends to become a leading host of international cricket events.
It will unveil its completed, state-of-the-art, facilities with a game between an India and Pakistan XI on May 14.
Said Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak al-Nahyan, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Cricket Control Board: "When we have won the approval of the International Cricket Council, we will aim organise regular tournaments featuring teams from all over the world."
The UAE is already established on the cricket map courtesy of tournaments staged in Sharjah. However, it is expected the new venue will further compound its international standing, with the royal family keen to use the new facilities heavily in wooing international travellers and sponsors for the cricketing events.
