BBC rides closer to the action

UK broadcaster the BBC has unveiled a range of new enhancements to its coverage of horse racing – including microphones attached to jockeys.

The BBC says it will draw on the success of microphones in other sports – such as rugby union – for its coverage of the coming season.
The innovations, which also include a camera travelling alongside the runners, come as part of Sunset+Vine’s new TV production package of much of the BBC’s racing coverage.
Said BBC Racing editor Stephen Cook: “Racing is such a dynamic and athletic sport and with the microphone we can get on top of the action.”
Trials have already taken place in recent weeks and been well received by viewers and BBC chiefs alike.
