It was HBO, though, that came out top – taking eight awards, compared to nearest rival ESPN’s seven.
Awards for HBO included two for its documentary series Real Sports.
ESPN came away with three of the biggest trophies – with its SportsCenter show winning best daily sports show, ESPN NFL Sunday Night Football taking the best live series award, and Sunday NFL Countdown pocketing the best weekly studio sports show gong.
Olympic broadcaster NBC took home four Emmys – three of which for coverage of the Ironman Triathlon World Championship. Fox beat off stiff competition to triumph with its postseason coverage of Major League Baseball in the outstanding live sports special category. ABC also won three awards. CBS took one award for its Tour de France coverage.
