USTA serves up new series

The US Tennis Association is set to unveil a new package of televised tournaments later today, aimed at building up interest in the sport in the build-up to the US Open.

The ten hard-court tournaments – to be known as the US Open Series - will form part of CBS’ $150m five-year TV deal it penned last November.
It is believed CBS will get at least two of the tournaments, with NBC carrying one event, and ESPN taking seven.
At the time the CBS deal was signed, it was revealed USTA chiefs were looking at putting together a package of events together designed to appeal to a wide TV audience, and culminating in the Grand Slam on August 30.
Now, after months of negotiations with the likes of the ATP and WTA, the USTA is set to unveil the details – and start searching for a major title sponsor for the series.
According to reports, the events will be marketed as one, with the semi-finals and finals being beamed between 4-6pm EDT – providing a consistent time slot for tennis.
The series will get underway on July 12 with the men playing in Los Angeles and the women in Stanford.
The other events, says US press reports, include the ATP tournaments in Indianapolis, Toronto, Cincinnati, Washington DC and Long Island. WTA events include Los Angeles, Montreal and New Haven.
