NHL in $1.2m death payment

The cost of a tragic accident during an NHL game in 2002, which left a 13-year-old girl dead, was made public for the first time this week - with the league contributing heavily to a $1.2m pay-out.

Settlement papers of a case bought by the parents of Brittanie Cecil, killed when a puck hit her during a Columbus Blue Jackets game, were made public for the first time and revealed the financial details.

The NHL, the franchise and the Nationwide Arena jointly paid $705,000 to the girl’s mother, and $470,000 to her father.

Lawyers had taken action against the three parties following the incident – as well as the hospital which treated their daughter.

The legal papers had been kept private following the settlement in February 2003, until Columbus’ WBNS-TV won the right for the details to be made public.
