David M. Shoemaker, 33, will become chief legal office and also oversee the Tour’s anti-doping programme, as well as serve as corporate secretary for the Tour’s board of directors.
Shoemaker, who assumes his new position on April 19, is an experienced corporate and commercial litigator with an emphasis in sports-related client representation. He joins the Tour after serving as a legal counsel at the New York law firm of Proskauer Rose LLP where his clients included the ATP, the National Hockey League (NHL) and Major League Soccer (MLS), as well as several individual sports teams, such as the Philadelphia Eagles, Montreal Expos and Florida Marlins.
Said WTA CEO Larry Scott: “David has a wealth of legal knowledge and experience, particularly with sports franchises, leagues and athletes, which will be invaluable in his role as chief legal officer.
“He represents another strong addition to our senior leadership team."
It is the latest senior hire for the WTA, following the appointments late last year of Bjorn Alven as managing director of Europe and Anne Hartman as director of broadcast media.
