NHL approves Thrashers sale

The NHL has approved the sale of the Atlanta Thrashers from Time Warner to the Atlanta Spirit investment group.

The approval of the $250m sale should mean the deal is concluded later this week.

Atlanta Spirit will acquire the Thrashers, the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks, and the Philips Arena from the media giant.

The NBA agreed the sale of the Hawks earlier this month.

The new owners are headed up by businessman Steve Belkin. Other members of the consortium include Rutherford Seydel – the son-in-law of Ted Turner.
