Beckenbauer blasts rotation plans

Franz Beckenbauer has blasted FIFA’s rotation policy for future World Cups.

Beckenbauer, president of the 2006 World Cup organising committee, issued a stinging attack on the method of choosing hosts during a visit to Dubai.

Said the former German player and manager: “UEFA made a big mistake by accepting FIFA’s rotation policy in my opinion. Europe cannot wait up to 24-years to host the World Cup. It is the biggest market, and the World Cup without Europe is not a World Cup.”

Germany will host the 2006 event, Africa 2010, and South America 2014. No decision beyond that has yet been made.

He also doubted the wisdom of bringing the 2010 tournament to Africa.

He added: “Can one African country organise an event with 32 countries and more than one million visitors? Maybe South Africa can, maybe Morocco. I just don’t know if it is a wise move bringing it to Africa.”

FIFA makes a final decision over the African host nation in May.
